Paka: Where Are You, Mama?
Paka: Where Are You, Mama?
by Karen Blake. Illustrated by Art Mawhinney.
A Story of Rare Courage, Unlikely Friends, and the Hidden Power of Being Small.
The Heart of the Story
The morning silence is shattered by a "piercing bullet spray" and a "blackening red sky". In the frantic escape from poachers and a spreading bushfire, Paka is knocked unconscious and left behind as his mama "snatches the cubs" to save them from the flames.
When Paka wakes "so alone," he discovers the plains have been transformed into a landscape of "choking smoke" and "burning plants". Rescued by rangers, he learns a devastating truth: poachers are nearby with a truck full of captured animals. Convinced his family is among the captives, Paka sets out on a daring rescue mission across the "river divide".
The "Not Quite Right" Hero
Paka has always felt he was "not looking quite right" because of his rare "stripes and spots". Throughout his journey, he worries that he is "not big enough" to face the dangers of the savanna.
However, when he reaches the poachers' truck, he discovers the truth:
-
The Strength in Size: While the larger animals are trapped, Paka realizes, "Maybe I AM small enough". His small stature allows him to find a hole and climb "up the side and out the top" to save his friends.
-
The Special King Cheetah: Paka learns he is a rare King Cheetah, and his mother’s wisdom rings true: "What you do makes you special, Paka".
-
Unlikely Allies: Paka is joined by Moru, a wise old lion; Daisy, a tender cub; and Drake, a whistling bird.
